Croft Avenue areal photo 2007

The Croft Avenue Book of the Road was the original idea of Barbara Evans, a long-time resident of the road and local historian. It was first compiled in the Millenium Year of 2000 by Barbara No 18, Keld, Charlie Macrorie (then a resident at No 16, Stoneham) and Barbara’s daughter Cathy Stevens.

It comprised an A3 size “Scrap Book” of photographs, maps, stories and personal recollections of Croft Avenue residents past and present.

The original Scrap Book was digitised and brought up to date in the Coronation Year, 2023 by Bryan Dennis (resident at No 12, Emsgarth). Although it is no longer a “Book” the original title has been retained.

The book is in three parts:

  1. Maps, Historical Photos & Aerial Photos - comprising a number of old maps of Dorking from the 17th Century to the present day; old photographs of the local area; and a number of aerial photographs of Croft Avenue.

  2. Recollections - including personal entries from many Croft Avenue residents (past & present); and other stories and anecdotes found in newspapers and local history books.

  3. The Road - comprising factual data about the road itself and the 29 individual houses that make up Croft Avenue.

Enjoy!

If you have any suggestions about what else to include, or better still, you would like to add your own story or anecdote about your house or the road please contact Bryan Dennis at home, or write to a.bryan.dennis@btinternet.com
